I recently found a table made by a craftswoman out of an old Missouri church and I love that it's made of recycled wood. It is now our focus table for the boys to set up. Right now Tobin has it set up for his little wooden salamanders. There is a squid there too that he knows does not belong, but he loves his squid. The other half is a focus on rock formations. We have plenty of rocks to sort into the three groups. And there is Tobin the fairy roasting marshmallows with an acorn spirit. They always make it their own and I admire that. We also painted pictures last week to set up as a background. Yep last week we did most of this. I am so slow.
We are also studying vikings right now. I didn't even mean to start the study on Columbus Day, but we did and they are enjoying it. Something that both boys really enjoy learning about is other cultures; especially ancient cultures. Today Lucas made a viking poster. Vikings were fabulous craftsmen and Lucas' poster really focuses on some of their known achievements. Here are some reference materials we have enjoyed or are enjoying right now; some about vikings, some not :)
DVD Vikings Journey To The New World Netflix has a really nice variety of documentaries and some you can watch on your computer which we like. You can always ask your library to pick up materials for you as well if you plan ahead.
You Wouldn't Want To Be A Viking Explorer!
The Barefoot Book Of Earth Tales
Pippi Longstocking (I bet I will be inspired to make a wooden pippi soon!) I really like this book. It's illustrated by Lauren Child and her work is so whimsical. Of course you have to give a peek into the books illustrated by Astrid Lundgren herself. Her work is always beautiful.
Bubble Homes and Fish Farts Yep this book got some giggles. Nothing like learning through laughter!
Minds and bodies are growing fast. Other projects we are working on are making long boats, polymer clay fossils and learning about Edger Allan Poe.
Happy Wednesday!!
